This is an unusually small example of a hathwandya (Newari, lit. "Beer-pour god") a "mask" of Bhairava that is set up on certain festival days, and from which beer or spirits is poured from a tube projecting from the hole in the mouth. This Dionysian festival is unique to the Newar culture of the Kathmandu valley, as are these heads of Bhairava.
