Peaceful Wind

15. Mahaksobhya
Nepal
Dated: 1775
gilded copper
6 1/2" tall
Mahaksobhya
Detail: three-quarters view right

This lovely gilt copper image is a fine example of later Newar Buddhist sculpture, which usually portrayed multi-armed tantric forms of the Buddhist gods such as the Mahaksobhya - the tantric form of the Buddha of the Eastern direction - seen here. The inscription records that the image was made in the year 1775 by a grandson in the name of his deceased grandfather.
