5. Crown
Nepal
16th-17th c.
gilded copper; with stones
9 1/2 in. tall x 7 1/2 in. wide x 5 3/4 in. deep (10 3/4 tall including stand)
Crown
Detail: view from the left

This crown may have been intended for wearing in a sacred dance performance, or perhaps was used to adorn the figure of a deity in wood or clay; it is likely that the figure was a Dakini, the young female goddesses so important to the tantric Buddhist tradition. The crown shows signs of damage and repair; the decorative elements under the skulls appear to have been re-affixed.
