Peaceful Wind

9. Bonpo Lama
Tibet
ca. 1600
bronze
5 3/4 inches tall
Bonpo Lama
Detail: 3/4 view looking right

This figure of a Lama is very likely of a Bonpo Lama, and is probably from an area near the far western Nepal/Tibet border. The unusual many-peaked crown is typically found in depictions of Bonpo hieracrchs. It has been suggested that the Lama depicted is Nyamed Sherab Gyaltsen (b. 1077), the first of the 33 abbots of Menri. (mNyam.pa. dMed. Shes.rab rGyan.mtsan)
