 Detail: close up of her mount A superb rendition of a traditional painting of one of the eight Mothers (astamatrika). Mahesvari, who can be interpereted as the female energy of Mahesvara or Siva or as Durge the consort of Siva, is shown dancing on the lion, Durga's mount, in an eight-armed form. The format of this painting is derived from double-sided banners of the Guardian gods and the Mother goddesses produced in the 16th and 17th c. in the Kathmandu Valley. Mukti Sigh Thapa is a central figure in the recent revival of the classical Newar style, the first painter to revive the style in painting using traditional materials and techniques.
